Race Report By Kyosho Team Driver Kyle Rhodes:
On Sunday May 25th I attended the CT State Championships at Wolcott Hobby and Raceway in Wolcott, Connecticut. Up for grabs was the State championships for 1/8th Nitro buggy, Truggy, electric 8th scale buggy and 4wd sc. I competed in 1/8th Nitro buggy. Going into the event I was the defending champion. I have been the Champion since 2011. The format for the race was 2 five minute qualifiers followed by a 30 minute A main. This event always draws in a great turnout with awesome racing in every class. This year we had close to 100 entries. Leading up to the event we experience a few days of rain which left the track a little soft, but the Wolcott Hobby crew did a great job of prepping the track and making sure there was no standing water. The day started off a little rough since I had only been able to get half a tank of practice before qualifying.
Qualifying: For qualifying there were 3 heats of Nitro buggy and I would be up in race number 3. Right at the beginning of the second heat we started to receive a little bit of rain. I was a little worried that the rain was going to continue and get worse and I wouldn’t be able to get my first qualifier in but luckily it quickly passed right before I hit the track. The little bit of rain made the track perfect. I jumped out front early and limited my mistakes and was able to set TQ for the round. For round 2 I left my car the same but mounted up a fresh set of Proline Blockades and hit the track. I made a few mistakes early on which left me in third for a few laps. I jumped back out front and was setting a new TQ by 6 seconds ahead of my round 1 time, but unfortunately had to pull off at the 3 minute mark. Luckily my TQ from round 1 was fast enough to give me the overall TQ.
Main: Going into the main I knew I had the pace to win and my car felt great in warm up. With the main being 30 minutes I decided to play it safe and pit early every 6 minutes. Off the start there were a few pile ups behind me and I quickly pulled away with clear track in front of me. By the end of my second fuel stop I had a lap lead on second place. For the remainder of the race I maintained a consistent pace and limited my mistakes and continued to pull away from the field. My pit guy Mike Denys did a great job keeping my pit stops fast and smooth. I took the win at the end of the 30 minutes and made it 3 straight CT State Championships. My Kyosho MP9 TKI3 was amazing all day especially in the main and was very easy to drive the entire time.
